Automated Mass Extraction of Over 680,000 PICOs from Clinical Study Abstracts Using Generative AI: A Proof-of-Concept Study

GenAI shows promise in automating key tasks involved in conducting SLRs, including screening, bias assessment and data extraction. This proof-of-concept study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, accuracy and efficiency of using GenAI for mass extraction of PICOs from PubMed abstracts.

The use of generative AI (e.g. GPT-4) to automate NMAs offers great potential to enable quicker and less costly decision making in healthcare, and this potential should be further developed, so that it might be harnessed and used to deliver faster patient access to medicines.

Using a novel LLM-based process, we constructed the base case analyses of published three-state partitioned survival analyses in R to a high degree of accuracy, demonstrating the feasibility of using GPT-4 to automate health economic model construction.
